Internship Opportunities (Compensated)

Please note: All dates are somewhat flexible based on the schedules of interns selected and internship extensions are possible. BAWT prefers six-month internship commitments, because we find that both the organization and interns gain the most from an extended working relationship. Summer only internships for more than 20 hours/week are possible for excellent candidates, but not-preferred.

Climbing for Kids Intern

Supervisor: Clifford Agocs, Climbing for Kids Coordinator
Location: San Francisco, CA

Scheduled Work Hours: 20-hours/week min; flexible schedule; Mon- Fri. 9-6

The Climbing for Kids Intern will work with the Climbing for Kids Coordinator, Climbing for Kids committee, and Co-Executive Directors on a variety of initiatives focused on the continued success of the Climbing for Kids events.

As much as possible, a specific project will be assigned to the intern, but exact tasks will depend upon the needs of the organization and the skills/interests of the intern. Projects may include any of the following:

  • Support BAWT's Climbing for Kids (www.climbingforkids.org) fundraising events with database data entry, advance planning and on-site logistics.
  • Phone, email and mail solicitation potential climbers and support to registered climbers.
  • Volunteer management including organizing, delegating, and managing tasks assigned to BAWT volunteers.
  • Create, support, plan and execute new small scale fund and awareness raising events, especially Information Sessions, post-climb parties and climber appreciation events. Eventually, lead Information Sessions (run Powerpoint presentations) to recruit climbers.
  • Ensure timely and continued contact with climbers before and after each event.
  • Attend and proactively participate in Climbing for Kids committee meetings. Which occur bi-monthly in the evenings. Focus will be planning for 2008.
  • Research and benchmarking of other fundraising events, in order to inform growth of CFK.
  • Participate in weekend/evening outreach events where applicable such as tabling at events like the Banff Mountain Film Festival, and Bay Area outdoor stores (REI, Patagonia).
  • Database management and donor acknowledgement.
  • Manage inventory of gear, set up ordering timelines, and ship gear to non-local climbers.

Skills required: Microsoft Word & Excel, experience with relational databases and mountaineering, climbing or extensive backpacking a plus. Comfort in PC environment preferred.


Development Intern - Two types

Supervisor: Roger Miller, Executive Director
Location: San Francisco, CA

Scheduled Work Hours: 20-hours/week min; flexible schedule; Mon- Fri. 8-5

The Development Intern will work with the CEO, Executive Director, Development Associate and Development, Marketing and Steering committees on a variety of development based activities.

As much as possible, a specific project will be assigned to the intern, but exact tasks will depend upon the needs of the organization and the skills/interests of the intern. Projects may include any of the following:

Grant writing development intern:

  • Grant writing, research, and support for foundation cultivation, track grants and grant proposals and write grants and reports.
  • Database management and updating as part of ongoing membership development.
  • Assist a database conversion team in the planning, pre-conversion data clean up, data migration and post conversion data clean up and system set up in a new online Application Service Provider (ASP) called Kintera.

Major donor development intern:

  • Grant writing, research, and support for foundation cultivation, track grants and grant proposals and write grants and reports.
  • Planning and execution of a Benevon™ style major donor giving event
  • Help to create/support new small scale fund and awareness raising events.
  • Phone, email and mail solicitation of potential corporate donors and event sponsors.
  • Manage volunteers, organizing BAWT's marketing and development committees, and managing tasks assigned to BAWT volunteers. Development and Marketing committee meetings occur once/month in evenings.
  • Database management and updating as part of ongoing membership development and assist in donor acknowledgement.
  • Assist a database conversion team in the planning, pre-conversion data clean up, data migration and post conversion data clean up and system set up in a new online Application Service Provider (ASP) called Kintera.

Skills required: Microsoft Word & Excel, experience with relational databases a plus. Graphic design and web development a double plus.


Program Intern

Supervisor: Chelsea Griffie, Program Manager
Location: San Francisco, CA

Scheduled Work Hours: 20-hours/week min; flexible schedule; Mon- Fri. 8-5

The Program Intern will work with the Program Manager, CEO, BAWT volunteers and course attendees and Program and Marketing committees on a variety of activities.

As much as possible, a specific project will be assigned to the intern, but exact tasks will depend upon the needs of the organization and the skills/interests of the intern. Projects may include any of the following:

  • Provide registration support, preparation and organization for BAWT's Map and Compass and Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness Leadership Training (WLT) courses.
  • Manage intake of gear reservations and confirmation
  • Stage gear requests, manage inventory and catalogue BAWT's gear resource libraries at either the San Francisco or Milpitas office locations.
  • Assist in the set up and logistics for a new BAWT gear library location in Milpitas, California (South San Francisco Bay). This may involve travel to Milpitas - Travel expenses will be reimbursed by BAWT.
  • Various marketing and outreach tasks
  • Manage volunteers, organizing BAWT's marketing and program committees, and managing tasks assigned to BAWT volunteers. Development and Marketing committee meetings occur once/month in evenings.

Skills required: Microsoft Word & Excel, experience with relational databases and outdoors gear a plus. Access to a vehicle a plus (travel expenses will be reimbursed by BAWT).


Marketing Intern

Supervisor: Kyle MacDonald, Founder and CEO
Location: San Francisco, CA

The Marketing Intern will work with the CEO, Program Manager, BAWT volunteers and Marketing committees on a variety of activities.

As much as possible, a specific project will be assigned to the intern, but exact tasks will depend upon the needs of the organization and the skills/interests of the intern. Projects may include any of the following:

  • Help to formulate BAWT marketing and outreach materials including newsletters, annual reports.
  • Manage volunteers, organizing BAWT's marketing committees, and managing tasks assigned to BAWT volunteers. Marketing committee meetings occur once/month in evenings.
  • Help to create/support new small scale awareness raising events.
  • Insure that BAWT course catalogs and brochures are designed and distributed by mail and through the Street Team.
  • Phone, email and mail engagement of volunteers (especially the Street Team), local businesses (to get BAWT literature displayed there), etc.
  • Participate in weekend outreach events where applicable such as tabling at Bay Area outdoor stores (REI, Patagonia).
  • Think and act creatively to engage the public in BAWT's work and get the word out about BAWT's programs and courses.

Skills required: Microsoft Word & Excel, experience with relational databases and Adobe graphic design applications (Illustrator, Photoshop) a plus.


Compensation & Benefits

  • $200/month Travel/Living Stipend during internship.

Expectations

  • Begin as soon as possible, and complete the internship once a mutual decision has been made to begin working together.
  • Arrive on time when expected.
  • Call if you can't come in and arrange a time to make up the hours missed.
  • Be flexible.
  • Be willing to learn new tasks.
  • Initiate work, when you see a need.
  • Have fun and have a sense of humor.

Exact intern tasks depend upon BAWT's needs, priorities and work plan for the months during the internship assignment. At BAWT, interns also have the chance to learn more about the many environmentally focused projects connected to Earth Island Institute.
