Announcing: 20,000 Youth Outdoors!
It is time to celebrate another huge milestone, as we work towards making sure that every kid in the Bay Area has a chance to get outdoors. 20,000 youth so far! We’ll be celebrating for the entire month of April, so stay tuned for more events, and help us share our excitement by tagging and sharing this story with your friends through your favorite forms of social media! www.facebook.com/BayAreaWildernessTraining
Here’s just one of those 20,0000 voices, a student, age 15 at Life Learning Academy:
“I got the chance to forget all the ordinary things in my life and feel nature for what it is — not like the city. Now that I am back that’s always going to be a memory that will bring me to a calm place in my mind.”
Thanks for helping make moments like that one possible. And for helping BAWT become a source of support for youth serving agencies and the youth they serve, all over the Bay Area for over 12 years!
Bummer! BAWT Got Hacked!
“OK, who would do that to a non-profit?” is what everyone keeps saying to me when I tell them what happened. Almost two weeks ago now, we found out that BAWT’s website had been hacked, and the hackers were attempting to use it as a “shell” to launch infections into other computers. Luckily we shut it down, so far as we know, none of our visitors were adversely affected. But…to our great frustration, major damage had been done. We’re working hard to build a new site, on a new web hosting company server, and get bawt.org back up and running.
Climbing for Kids: climbing for the next 20,000!
At 36 climbers, the Climbing for Kids season is well underway and it’s not too late to rope in for a climb this year! Climbing for Kids has been a significant part in helping BAWT get 20,000 youth outdoors and we want you to be a part of getting 20,000 more. Sign up for a June or July climb and we’ll match your $250 deposit putting you $500 towards your fundraising goal – and you’re well on your way to a personal summit! Our June and July climbs feature two Shasta dates and one Whitney date. These mountains tower over their California landscapes and present classic and challenging climbs! More info at www.climbingforkids.org or join us on Facebook.
Notes from the Trail
Gear Corps in Oakland, Third Thursdays in the city
Get your volunteer groove on – and help BAWT keep its gear in top shape for the youth we serve. Almost every Tuesday evening, BAWT’s Oakland gear library stays open late. Gear Corps volunteers help stage, clean and repair gear, while helping youth workers and having a blast with other volunteers. In San Francisco, every Third Thursday of the month we’ll be doing the same thing out at Camping At the Presidio program. Contact Zak Klein, CAP Program coordinator for details about volunteering in San Francisco. Contact Aaron for volunteering in Oakland.
Terry Nail is BAWT’s South Bay Programs Manager, and would love your help! Contact Terry for more on volunteer opportunities in and around our Milpitas Office
