Kyle Says. . .”Thanks!”
Most of you likely already know the news. I announced on May 2nd, with incredibly mixed emotions, that I will be departing BAWT in Fall of this year. And while I knew I’d get a few replies to that email with questions and well wishes, I was not prepared for the flood of kind words that came my way from all corners of the community, from past youth workers I’ve instructed on courses, to donors and parents of teenage Climbing for Kids climbers, to people I’ve never met that were touched by BAWT’s work. I’d like to share just one of these quotes, with the hope that you all might know what a special organization you’re a part of:
“Thank you for re-connecting me to the wilderness again. BAWT has allowed me through the years to take several groups of disadvantage youth into the great outdoors of California and connect them with Mother Nature.” – Joe, San Jose, CA
I can’t help but feel so tremendously grateful, to all of you who have partnered with BAWT, and with me, to help make BAWT’s mission happen.
BAWT Corporate Sponsor Round-Up
We’ve enjoyed seeing brown boxes, with colorful gear arrive at BAWT headquarters. BAWT and CFK both have been getting the gear we need to get kids outdoors. Check out the cool gear below: An Osprey Pack, North Face“The Cats Meow” sleeping bag, GSI Water Bottles and Cook Set, some Gu Energy Products, and a kit from Adventure Medical Kits. A big thanks to our generous corporate sponsors!
To get some of this gear for yourself, check out our Climbing for Kids fundraiser, climber spots are still available on the mountains!
Oakland Unified Goes Frontcountry Camping
On a gorgeous weekend in April (we’ve been getting spoiled right?!), BAWT extended its work with the Oakland Unified School District by training 12 teachers and after-school program staff through our overnight Frontcountry Leadership Training. We utilized our new favorite “near-nature” site, Puma Point at Anthony Chabot (Oakland), where participants practiced map and compass, risk management, proper gear use and campground cooking. At this rate, we’ll be reaching 5,000 kids in the Oakland Schools next school year alone. As is always the case, our hats are off to teachers, who’s dedication and enthusiasm makes getting kids outdoors a reality.
Climbing the Vines- Our first annual silent auction was a huge success!
May 6th featured our first annual Climbing the Vines event. While no “Vines” were climbed, 40 participants headed out to Castle Rock State Park for some bouldering and rock climbing lead by our friends at SWS Mountain Guides.
After the rock climbing some more friends joined us at Cooper-Garrod Vineyards for some wine tasting, a raffle, and a silent auction. The auction items included Guest Passes to the Lawrence Hall of Science, Private Wine and Cheese tastings from Vinter’s Collective, a GSI Cooking Set and other camping gear, among others. There was a nature photography workshop, trail hike, and plenty of socializing. The climbing, sipping, and bidding were all huge successes and if you didn’t get to join us this year be on the lookout for Climbing the Vines next year! See the photo album and don’t forget to like BAWT’s Facebook Page.
Lucky raffle winner, Karolo Aparicio, walks away with a
Mountain Hardware Backpack!
Notes from the Trail
Eureka! Did you see us on the Eureka! Site? Our wonderful sponsors at Eureka Tent gave our Camping at the Presidio program a slide on their homepage. Eureka’s support is crucial to our mission of getting kids outdoors.
Climbing for Kids season features 36 climbers climbing 5 mountains in 3 different states setting out to raise more than $90,000 for BAWT! It’s not too late to sign up! We still have spots open on Mt. Shasta and Mt. Whitney.
