Inlakech, Fall 2002A Critical MomentThe past six months at BAWT have been full of changes, some of them positive, but not all of them easy. The slowed economy has begun to effect the assets of private foundations, and in turn non-profits around the country. As a small, grass roots organization, BAWT is among those affected.
The downsizing of staff has been the hardest adjustment. Weve had to say good-bye to Gretchen Larsen, BAWTs Programs and Resource Associate, as well as Marya Kahan, both of whom put in countless hours helping to keep the equipment in great shape for all of you educators out there. Thanks Gretchen and Marya! The biggest change, however comes with the departure of Alicia Gray, BAWTs Program Director. Alicia has been with BAWT for over two years and has built BAWTs reputation for high quality Wilderness Leadership Trainings through her hard work and dedication to the mission. Among her many achievements were the expansion of our trainings to include two sections per course (20 people) and the establishment of terrific Instructor Training and Wilderness First Aid classes that have filled with every offering. She will be sorely missed, and we wish her well. While all this change is certainly difficult, there is a sharp irony at play. BAWT has served more youth in 2002 than any year previous. We have more equipment, a stronger-than-ever steering committee, and our community continues to grow as we welcome excited new volunteers every week. It is a critical moment for the organization. In the face of the financial downturn, we are forced to move quickly towards maturity and a more diverse revenue stream. This is where all of you play a critical role. In order to continue to provide the services BAWT has become known for, we will need to increase the percentage of funds coming from individuals, corporations, and fee-for-service income. As this years fall appeal comes to your door, know that whatever you can give will bring us one step closer to building a more recession-proof organization. Ultimately this means that whatever the economic climate, well be able to get youth into nature and provide youth educators with the Bay Areas only equipment loan library. The volunteers that came through for us this August and September illustrated to me, once again, how vital this community is. People are willing to help in order that we may see yet another young person sleep under the stars for the first time. This fall will test our resolve once again. All of you have an opportunity to say Ill help! by making a donation of time or money this fall. In this way you'll be giving hopethrough a connection to natureto hundreds of youth again, and again, and again.
