We did it!
While 2009 will go down in our BAWT history books as a tough year financially –
many of you, despite the odds, gave generously – either through Climbing For Kids,
Into the Wild, or at year end – and helped to make 2009 a year worth celebrating.
This month also marks our one year anniversary in BAWT's Uptown Oakland location,
where we have 10 times the space for our gear library than we did in San Francisco.
With more gear, we're poised to train even more leaders to get youth outdoors.
Speaking of which, I'm excited to announce that in 2009 – our 10th year – BAWT achieved
an amazing milestone – we saw our 10,000th youth get outdoors since our founding in 1999!
Words can't describe how proud I am to lead such an amazing organization, making such
a powerful impact for so many youth. Thank you again for making our work possible.
2 more ways to help get youth outdoors
Sunblock? Check. Map? Check. Sleeping bag. Got it. But your packing list for camping
shouldn't end there and BAWT's here to get you ready. BAWT's excited to introduce two
new ways to get youth outdoors in less the time than before. The two day
Frontcountry Leadership Training (FLT),
generously funded by the Stewardship Council, covers all the basic skills needed to
take youth on car-camping based overnight trips. With our second new program,
Gear Orientation (GO!), you can get
oriented to our gear libraries - with your choice of Oakland or Milpitas - and learn
to navigate our reservations program, as well as other policies and procedures.
Together, FLT and GO! will empower you to get kids into the wild within two days and
an evening; saving you time and money and still helping you connect kids to nature.

Thank you, Roger – here's to your next adventure!
After seven years with the organization, first as a board member, and the last four
and a half years as Executive Director, I will be leaving Bay Area Wilderness
Training, effective June 5, 2010. It is with a mixture of sadness and excitement that
I announce my decision to leave BAWT and this job, which has been one of the best jobs
I've ever had. My wife and I have been planning for the last five years to do some
extended traveling and are looking forward to spending time in Alaska, along the
Pacific Crest Trail and in South America. It has been a true honor to work with BAWT
in every capacity and I look forward to continuing to do so as a volunteer in years to come.
