Good Samaritans in the Great Outdoors
Good Samaritan Family Resource Center, with the help of Bay Area Wilderness Training, sponsored a youth camping trip in early August to the Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. Most of the group of 21 Latino youth ages 11-14 had never been camping – and they were astonished by the vibrant beauty and contrasting elements of the park. Every day of the six days we spent in the park was filled with exploration and learning as the group hiked the Bumpass Hell trail that leads to boiling lakes and steam vents, played in snow patches, swam in lakes and visited nearby hot springs. For the last two days, our group joined northern California Native American tribes for the final ceremonies of the Ancestral Run, a cultural event that included running, sweat lodges, traditional dances and peer bonding. BAWT made this trip possible by providing tents, sleeping bags, tarps and sleeping pads. The Lassen Park Foundation also supported the trip by donating funds and providing campgrounds and entry fees at no cost to us. Written by Jose Carrasco, Youth Services Manager 
Great people climbing Mountains for BAWT
Brent Klava, Andrea Howard and SWS Guide John descening Mt Shasta Climbing for Kids is going strong in 2010 with sucessful climbs completed on Mount Shasta, Mount Rainier, Cathedral Peak and Mount Hood. But, the climbing season isn't over yet! There is one more excited group heading up to Mount Rainier at the end of September for a summit push. In addition, a group of OAK climbers created their own BAWT fundraiser by climbing up Mt. Whitney. It has been a great year for the program and we are already working hard on the next CFK season. BAWT team takes OR by Storm!
Earlier this month, BAWT’s senior staff flew off to Salt Lake City to grow our relationships with corporate partners in the Outdoor Retailer (OR) Industry. BAWT staff have been heading off twice a year to this show for close to five years now, drumming up sponsorships for our Climbing for Kids program and ultimately, outdoor gear that goes to climbers and most importantly young people through our gear libraries. Staff had lots of meetings with over 20 companies as well as lots of fun both on the show floor and off. Check out the photos and video on our facebook page.
A first: Gregory Packs hosted a gear raffle to benefit BAWT, and brought great exposure to our work. Thanks to Stephanie and Jim at Gregory for their time and product! BAWT attends "Youth Listening Session" The Department of the Interior has been traveling around the country, listening to the youth and their suggestions how to get kids connected with nature, and BAWT is involved. Part of President Obama's America's Great Outdoors Initiative, the findings will be reported to the President in November. When the youth listening session came to Berkeley in July, they additionally asked youth leaders who work to get youth outdoors to voice their opinions on issues ranging from administrative and fundraising to innovative ideas to get youth outdoors. Grace Malango-Blake, CAP staff, facilitated the youth discussion, while Zak Klein, CAP staff, and Elin Kjølseth, Marketing Intern, voiced their opinions among other youth workers. In addition, we got to network with a number of other organizations all aiming to get more youth outdoors. The sundry Stuff-sack This new, recurring column, is the place we stuff any news, links, props and backcountry tid-bits that didn't fit into the newsletter, but that deserves a place in our metaphorical pack. Enjoy! Summer has been a great time to get youth (and adults) outdoors. Last newsletter, we told you about Lance Powell, a science teacher in Menlo who takes the class outdoors. A week after his trip, InMenlo did a story on Lnace with a nice nod to BAWT. Chelsea Griffie, our program director, co-led the country's only Women of Color Backpacking trip in Yosemite.
