FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT)?

A: Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) is a project of Earth Island Institute, a 501(c)(3) corporation founded by environmental activist and climber David Brower. Brower’s legacy as a climber with hundreds of first ascents on High Sierra peaks is only overshadowed by his legacy as a tireless champion of the environment. Q: What is OAK?

A: Outdoor Adventures for Kids (OAK) is a program that helps outdoor enthusiasts turn their outdoor adventures into fundraisers for Bay Area Wilderness Training. With the help of OAK, you can turn just about any activity into a fundraiser: a backpacking trip, a bike ride, a mountain climb, roller skating across the country… the possibilities are endless!

Q: What is the purpose of Outdoor Adventures for Kids?

A: To give a deeper level of meaning to peoples’ personal outdoor adventures. You choose and organize your own adventure - something that will be fun, adventurous, and interesting to you. We’ll help provide you with gear and make it easy for you to use your adventure as a way to fundraise for BAWT. Your outdoor adventure will provide funds for innovative programs that help get deserving young people on their own adventures.

Q: What do you mean by "deeper level of meaning?"

Make a difference in kids’ lives; the money that you raise gives underprivileged youth the chance to experience the outdoors first-hand.

Challenge yourself and demonstrate leadership and creativity by creating and leading your own personalized fundraising project.

A: Just about any outdoor activity can be turned into an outdoor adventure fundraiser. In general, the activity should satisfy the following criteria:

Challenge yourself!—Your adventure is an opportunity to grow. Don’t be afraid to try something that will be challenging to you. Lots of people have achieved personal goals or discovered new passions through their fundraising projects.

Do what you like!—What makes a great adventure is up to you. Have fun and do something you will enjoy!

Some examples of activities include: Bike rides, swims, runs, rock climbs, thru-hikes, backpacking trips, kayaking, canoeing, triathalons, or cragging. Casual outdoor adventures can also make great fundraisers: camping trips, sports days, bird watching, barbeques, or other gatherings in the great outdoors. The possibilities are endless!
