Wilderness Leadership Training

Next Sessions 2008:

Applications for any particular WLT course are due 3 weeks prior to the course pre-trip date or until the course is full (this may be before or after this deadline).

  • May 21-25, 2008. Mandatory pre-trip meeting May 17.
    Applications for the May course are due April 6th. Notification will be on or before April 11th. Course Full

  • June 23-27, 2008. Mandatory pre-trip meeting June 14.
    Applications for the June course are due May 25th or until the course is full. Notification of acceptance for applicants meeting due date will be on or before May 30th. All other applications will be decided on a rolling basis.

  • September 10-14, 2008. Mandatory pre-trip meeting September 6.
    Applications for the September course are due Saturday, August 16th at midnight. Notification of applicants accepted begins Monday, August 25th. All other applications will be decided on a rolling basis. Applications for the Amy Chamberlain Scholarship for the September WLT course are also due Saturday, August 16th at midnight (late applications not accepted).


Course:

This intensive, five day course is the heart of BAWT's programs. It is designed to give you the tools you need to take youth on multi-day backpacking adventures.

Completion of the course allows you access to our equipment loan system. The training consists of a mandatory pre-trip meeting in San Francisco and five days of backpacking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. You will learn about proper clothing, basic wilderness first aid, nutrition, equipment use, map & compass reading, leadership styles, group dynamics and more. Role plays are utilized to allow for a realistic back-country leadership experience. Participants will learn by doing! Food and transportation are provided. (No experience necessary)

Cost:

Nonaffiliated individuals may register, however priority is given to youth service organizations. Please choose the appropriate registration fee by selecting your annual agency budget (total support and revenue for the past fiscal year.) Please note: training costs for one individual are waived for organizations allowing use of a 15 person passenger van.

  1. $199,999 and under -- $150
  2. $200,000-$999,999 -- $250
  3. $1,000,000+ -- $400
  4. Unaffiliated Individual -- $700  

If financial constraints are prohibiting you from signing up for the WLT, please consider applying for the full tuition Amy Chamberlain Scholarship Fund. BAWT also trades one slot with any agency sending both a van and a driver to the WLT.

Cancellation Policy:

You must notify Bay Area Wilderness Training of a cancellation at least two weeks prior to the pre-trip meeting for the WLT, or the start date for any workshop. You will be refunded 75% of your total registration fees if notification is given within that time frame. No refunds will be issued for cancellations after the time mentioned. A full refund will be given in the event that we cancel a course.
