JOBS AND INTERNSHIPS:
Interns and volunteers make our mission possible!
earn school credit, learn vital skills, and attend tuition-free outdoor leadership courses– all while helping with our mission of increasing outdoor access for youth of color and of low-income backgrounds.
Our internships are 2-6 months. They are unpaid. Benefits include tuition-free courses, free use of our gear libraries, and experience working in a professional environment in a mission-driven organization. For more information, requirements and application detials, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Program interns play an active and high-impact role in our outdoor gear lending libraries. Interns can expect to learn how to repair and clean gear, manage inventory, and use all sorts of outdoor equipment.
Development Interns work with accounting, work with our database and help organize fundraising events, working with BAWT’s Director of Development and members of the Development Committee.
Marketing Interns help with social media, marketing material production, help organize events and campaigns, and work closely with the volunteer Art Director, the Marketing Committee and BAWT’s Executive Director.
Jocelyn Rose Everett
California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS)
“During my internship I was completing my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies at California Institute of Integral Studies. My main focus while at CIIS was ecopsychology, how the mind relates to nature. As a part of my senior project at CIIS, I was to create a project related to social justice and social change, so I decided to create a curriculum for an ecopsychology inspired workshop. The workshop is titled Wilderness Inspirations. My co-facilitator and I take participants through exercises to connect them to the land, and wrap up the experience by supporting partakers to make an art piece reflecting their experience … my goal in life is to link individuals to their innate, deeply embedded relationship to nature through meditation, social justice, and art. My experience with the BAWT team has been filled with inspiration, and genuine loving kindness. I am excited to see what other beautiful projects BAWT has in store, and look forward to staying part of the BAWT community.”
There are ALWAYS volunteer opportunities available. Our volunteers do everything from general office duties, IT, design, leading training courses to maintaining gear. Volunteers staff our events and tables, stuff our envelopes, and help us develop our marketing, fundraising and training programs. Contact us, we’ll be sure to find a use for your skills!
We greatly appreciate all the support our volunteers give us. Volunteering with BAWT can be one-time or ongoing and completely depends on your schedule. There are opportunities to volunteer at Oakland and South Bay / Milpitas.
Every third Wednesday of the month, from 6-9pm, we have a Discovery Session where those interested in BAWT come to find out more about our organization and ways to get involved. Meet and connect with like-minded folks and tackle important projects that help get kids outdoors. Projects include repairing gear, helping us spread the word about BAWT through mail campaigns, and other essential (and fun!) odd jobs. Please RSVP before coming.

join the board
Be a part of the movement for equity and access to the outdoors for youth of color and of low-income backgrounds. Bay Area Wilderness Training is seeking passionate and energetic people with resources and connections to serve on its Board of Advisors. This is an opportunity for professional growth, leadership development, community engagement, and service. Involvement at the board level gives you a bigger picture perspective on BAWT as an organization and offers significant opportunities for personal and professional expansion. BAWT is entering a significant period of strategic impact and capacity building so we need leaders like you to help guide us!.
join a committee
BAWT has a range of volunteer-driven committees including a Fundraising Committee (fundraising events, as well as annual strategy and tracking), Operations Committee (marketing, website, IT and software conversions, facilities and operational planning) and Community Engagement Committee (board recruiting, ambassador events, corporate giving, volunteerism and community surveys). Our committees usually meet once a month and tackle important, strategic decisions.
join the gear corps!
