Oakland Goes Outdoors

In partnership with the Oakland Unified School District, and thanks to the generous support of the San Francisco Foundation, BAWT offers the Oakland Goes Outdoors (OGO) Grant Program. The goal of OGO is to provide outdoor educational experiences to every middle school student in Oakland.

Application deadline October 1, 2019 at 5:00pm
Grant Period: November 1, 2019 to October 31, 2020


Grantees will receive

This bold and visionary program offers the following to middle schools awarded: 

Trip funding 

Receive funding for trips to pay for food, transportation, campsite reservations, stipends for chaperones, etc. 

Free professional development 

Free Frontcountry Leadership Training for teachers and afterschool staff. 


Free gear loans 

Access to free outdoor equipment loans from Bay Area Wilderness Training gear libraries.


Receive stipends for planning outdoors trips (both for day-time teachers and after-school staff). 

Trip Planning Support 

Trip planning workshops to receive continued support with planning. 

Outdoor trip leader community 

Build community with other OUSD staff getting youth outdoors.


Requirements for receiving full grant funds and stipends: 


Designate two Outdoor Trip Leaders

A school day teacher and an after school staff member must work together to submit the application, attend 4 trip planning sessions, ensure grant is carried out, and complete reports after trips. These two staff will be Outdoor Trip Leaders and each receive a stipend.  


Complete application

Complete and turn in application online by October 1, 2019.


Commit to taking kids outdoors

Commit to taking a minimum of 75 students on camping trips during the grant period.


Complete Training

Two staff must complete a Frontcountry Leadership Training in November or February with Bay Area Wilderness Training.  This training is free and included with the grant award.


Comply with OUSD policies for overnight field trips
